Special 26 is inspired by the real-life incident of the Opera House heist, which took place in Mumbai on 19 March 1987. A group of men posing as CBI officers raided a jewellery store and walked away with jewellery worth lakhs of rupees. The case remained unsolved for years until the real culprits were caught in 2014.

The movie follows a similar modus operandi, but with a twist. The leader of the gang, Ajay Singh (Akshay Kumar), is a former CBI officer who was dismissed for corruption. He recruits a team of talented con artists, including P.K. Sharma (Anupam Kher), Joginder (Rajesh Sharma) and Iqbal (Kishore Kadam), and executes several raids across the country, targeting corrupt politicians and businessmen. They use fake CBI identity cards and newspaper ads to lure their victims and escape without leaving any trace.

However, their activities catch the attention of the real CBI, especially Waseem Khan (Manoj Bajpayee), a senior officer who is determined to catch them.
