The novel revolves around the love story of Kanji and Jivi, who belong to different castes and face social opposition and family pressure. Kanji is a Patel, a landowning farmer, while Jivi is a barber's daughter. They meet at the Kaleshwari fair and fall in love at first sight. However, they are unable to marry due to their caste differences and Kanji's elder brother's family, who depend on him for their livelihood. Kanji's friend Hiro suggests a plan to get Jivi married to Dhula, a barber in their village, and then elope with her. Kanji reluctantly agrees to this plan, hoping to be with Jivi.
However, things do not go as planned. Dhula turns out to be a suspicious and abusive husband, who tortures Jivi physically and mentally. Kanji also suffers from guilt and remorse for his actions. He decides to leave the village and move to the city, where he works as a labourer. Jivi, meanwhile, tries to escape from her miserable life by attempting suicide. However, she accidentally kills Dhula instead and becomes mentally unstable. She longs for Kanji and waits for him to return.
Kanji eventually comes back to the village after hearing about Dhula's death. He finds Jivi in a pitiable condition and decides to take care of her. He realizes that his love for Jivi has transformed into a spiritual bond and he renounces his worldly desires. He takes Jivi to a temple and vows to serve her as his goddess. The novel ends with a poignant scene of Kanji and Jivi united in their souls. 061ffe29dd
